Irrigation type variable frequency drives (VFDs) have been around for many years. The engineers at Industrial Control Direct (ICD) have spent the last six years refining the advanced design to a product that gives us pride. We have taken user information as well as empirical data associated with mean time before failure (MTBF) rates and created a solution that is not offered by any other company. In most cases, the designs on the market are made at the VFD manufacturer’s factory where there are no accommodations for some of the peculiar requirements of agricultural locations or farms. Most rural locations have harsh environments including extreme heat, cold, bad weather, and power network issues such as being ungrounded or single phase. The systems tend to be noisy and interrupt instrumentation like GPS and other types of signals running pivots or pumping systems. These disturbances can wreak havoc on pressure and control loops that keep operations in automatic mode running smoothly. In our designs, we present the following standard features that are a step above anything you have seen before:

The base drive is configured such that the internal filter is disabled for any type of power network and is the way we add a parallel EMI filter back into the design. The drive has a built-in DC choke (inductor) that we found through testing is not enough, so we added an AC input reactor. However, the output sine filter is the most important part of this design. Why? In most cases, farmers, as well as electrical companies associated with agricultural work, use general-purpose wire and cables like THHN or SO cord. In the industrial world, this is a problem based on many issues (please see our VFD rated cable—https://www.industrialcontroldirect.com/ac-drives-168/vfd-cable-462/). The sine filter allows the VFD to operate with most commercial wire and cable types; furthermore, the motor does not have to be inverter rated. The distance from this drive to the motor can be 1,000 feet (for longer runs call us). The design also works well with submersible pumps and other OEM-supplied induction motors.
